While the Eurovision Song Contest may have dominated the headlines in Moscow over the past few days a rather important poker tournament was taking place just down the road at the Renaissance Hotel. A high quality field of 206 players including WSOP bracelet winner Alex Kravchenko and WSOP Main Event finalist Ivan Demidov bought in to the $7,000 PokerStars Russia Main Event.

The title was eventually won by Full Tilt professional and sometime backgammon champion Vitaly Lunkin who outlasted his better known opponents to claim the top prize of $445,709. Lunkin sealed the victory when his pocket tens stood up against heads-up opponent Vyacheslav Goryachev’s A6. The win took the Moscovite’s earnings past the $1million mark.

Lunkin, a former manager of a dietary supplement company, is no stranger to success having won a bracelet in the $1,500 buy in No Limit Hold ‘Em event in last year’s World Series.
