Ville Wahlbeck wins WSOP Event #12 -$10,000 World Championship Mixed Event

Wednesday, 10 June 2009

Ville Wahlbeck may have thought that his best chance of winning a bracelet at this year’s WSOP had already gone after his third place finish in the $10,000 Seven Card Stud Event. That performance was just the warm up for the 33-year-old Finn though who bettered it by taking down the highly coveted $10,000 mixed event.

The mixed event, which features No-limit Hold'em, Pot-limit Omaha, Triple Draw Lowball, Limit Hold'em, Razz, Seven-card Stud, Seven-card Stud Eight-or-better and Omaha Hi-lo attracted a top quality field including Doyle Brunson, $40,000 No Limit Champion Vitaliy Lunkin, Max Pescatori and NBC Heads Up champion Huck Seed who all cashed. Nobody could match Wahlbeck though who claimed his first bracelet by beating four-time WSOP bracelet winner David Chiu heads up.

Speaking after the win Wahlbeck, a former teacher said “Playing in the Stud event and coming in third was great for me. Of course, I wanted to win. To come back and to win this event after that happened – it’s a dream come true.”

The final table positions and payouts were as follows:

1. Ville Wahlbeck $ 494,384
2. David Chiu $ 304,176
3. Scott Dorin $ 199,939
4. Mark Gregorich $ 139,158
5. Huck Seed $102,285
6. James van Alstyne $79,180
7. Mike Wattel, USA $64,373
8. Todd Brunson $54,853
