Going into the final day of the World Poker Tour championship at the Bellagio, James Van Alstyne is the favourite and chip leader. Having learnt to play whilst studying at Stanford, Van Alstyne became a professional blackjack player before turning his attention full-time to poker and winning poker tournaments. His career earnings top the $1 million mark but if he can hold his nerve then that figure is about to jump considerably.
His previous major wins came in games of Omaha at WSOP tourneys in the late 90s and beating Todd Brunson in a minor qualifying tournament in 2004. He is being chased by relative unknown Joeseph Bartholdi along with Claus Nielson and Davidson Matthew. The final table kicks off today and if Van Alstyne can hold his nerve he’s in for fame and fortune over the coming months.
