Unibet Cannes Gets Under Way

Unibet Cannes Gets Under Way

Friday, 20 September 2013

The post-summer tournament action continued to build yesterday with the first session of this year's €1,650 Unibet Open Cannes. Whilst the WPT, GUKPT, LAPT and WCOOP have been keeping players busy recently, Unibet's premier event still managed to attract 145 players over the course of Day 1A.

From European legends to such as Pieter de Korver and Manig Loeser to keen amateurs such as former Swedish footballer Thomas Brolin, yesterday's field was certainly an eclectic mix of talent.

Indeed, as the day wore on the swarm of local French talent was certainly making itself known to circuit regulars such as Loeser who found himself on the wrong end of variance after just a few levels of play.

After picking up pocket kings the German pro decided to commit all of his chips against Franck Silvestre with the board reading [7d] [8s] [6c]. With Silvestre holding [9h] [6h] a call was inevitable and as the turn and river produced the [2h] and [Ts], Loeser became one of the day’s first casualties.

By the time ten levels of play were complete just 47 players were left with a chip stack, including the current chip leader Paul Tedeschi. The French player managed to bag 243,200 chips to finish ahead of such notables as: Johnny Østbjerg (118,000), Jorma Vuoksenmaa (69,000), Dmitry Varlamov (92,600) and Pieter de Korver (46,100).

Day 1B is expected to attract even more players by the time registration closes, meaning the total prizepool should easily breach the €300,000 mark.
