US pensioner jailed after poker shoot out

Saturday, 15 October 2011

When we hear about shootouts and poker these we immediately think of a series of sit 'n' go tournaments rather than guns and bullets. Unfortunately it was the latter type of shootout that has led American pensioner Aaron Awtry to five years in jail.

The 73-year-old was sentenced to five years in jail after pleading guilty to attempted murder and assault after a deputy was wounded in a gambling raid last November. Awtry, who opened fire on officers who were trying to break down his front door, thought that he was being robbed.

"If he had known the police were at the door, I can assure you he would have opened it and then told them they could come in," said Awtry's lawyer Jeff Phillips.
