US federal grand jury to investigate Full Tilt Poker?

Wednesday, 7 April 2010

According to the Financial Times, a federal grand jury in Manhattan is investigating Full Tilt Poker, the world’s second largest online poker site.

The issues with online poker in the US are not new but according to a subpoenaed witness this could see indictments brought against players such as Howard Lederer and Chris Ferguson.

The lawyer for Lederer and Ferguson declined to comment According to the witness with inside knowledge of Full Tilt (Ms. Gowen, perhaps?) the investigation is to do with money laundering and gambling laws. Online poker is not illegal in the US, despite what many think, but it is difficult.

The Financial Times wrote that the case “would fit the federal law enforcement strategy by trying to make an example out of prominent targets" and according to Nelson Rose, an author of books on gambling law and adviser to some companies in the industry. “They are waging this war of intimidation. There are not a lot of good statutes, so they go after high-profile targets and try to intimidate everybody.”
