David Vamplew takes the chip lead - decisively

Tuesday, 5 October 2010

This, to me, is the beauty of tournament poker. Last week David Vamplew was a maths graduate from Edinburgh who was one of thousands of mid-stakes online cash game grinders that populate the tables. A faceless poker player who beats up on regulars and hunts down fish online.

Now he's the EPT London Main Event champion and a stone's throw away from being crowned the UKIPT Champion of Champions. What a difference one week, some luck and serious poker skills make!

Jamie Burland bet 28,000 on the river of a Jh-6s-3s-Ts-8d board and Vamplew pondered for an age, shaking his head from side to side as though weighing up the options of call or fold were actually tipping the scales in his brain. He called with A-J and was shown a bluff in the shape of A-9.

Sick call, sick poker story. A week from faceless grinder to EPT London champion - I can see how he did it.
