It seems that being a pro these days just doesn’t guarantee you a place at the top, just ask Joe Hachem. The current WSOP champion with a raft of titles and a massive following has lost out at the New Zealand Poker Open to a school teacher from the UK.
Alan Goodrum saw off 150 competitors and beat the odds at the final table to win $62,000 and a seat at the WSOP Main Event at Harrah’s, Las Vegas. This win came hot on the heels of his victory in the New Zealand-based, Peter Peko Memorial Tournament earlier in the week. In the open event, Goodrum had a massive chip deficit and spent most of his time at the final table behind eventual runner-up Nick “The Gun” Nicolau, before calling his bluff with a flush. Once the tide had turned, Goodrum went on to wipe the floor, eventually taking the title with an unsuited 9 and 10. He described the feeling as “unbelievable”.
If he manages to do anything at the WSOP you can be certain that returning to his day job back in the UK will not be on the cards.
