The Gambling Act comes into effect this September, with The Dome in South-East London tipped to become the UK’s first supercasino. Among the attractions at the new super-casino will be Europe’s largest poker room.
The Metropolitan Police report suggested that large casino complexes were rich grounds for organised criminal gangs, whilst also highlighting concerns about increased numbers of women and children gamblers. However, supercasinos could be seen as ‘entertainment complexes’ and represent the ‘acceptable’ side of gambling that old-fashioned betting shops do not.
Under the Gambling Act, the Casino Advisory Panel will report by the end of the month on where the supercasino licence should go. Sixteen licences for smaller casinos will also be distributed. Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell will make the final decision.
As to whether London’s new supercasino would one day hold a World Series of Poker event, is a question that remains unclear.
