With disregard for the fact that ‘tis the season to be jolly, a number of poker-related businesses are apparently having to lay off staff to make savings following the decision of the US government to effectively ban online gambling with their Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA).
Poker pundit Paul McGuire claims that the impact of the new legislation has been hard-hitting, with many jobs in the once lucrative sector either lost or subject to pay cuts.
Readers closer to home can take comfort from the fact that the same cannot be said for the European market since the cause of the cuts is mainly lost advertising revenues from large poker companies that have either ended their US-facing business, or have experienced reductions in revenues as a direct result of the UIGEA.
