UIGEA To Be Enforced in December.

Wednesday, 2 September 2009

More than one bank based in the United States has begun the process of sending letters to customers, stating that the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act is to be enforced in December and that all penalties will be bought in.

The Zions Bancorporation (overseers of banks in Utah, Washington, Nevada, Texas and many other states) sent letters to customers recently stating: “In compliance with the U.S. Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, we are required to notify you that you are prohibited from processing transactions derived from Internet bets or wagers where such bet or wager is unlawful under any applicable Federal or State law.”

This news could be worse. While this is sure to be a worry for US online players, the law does not make online poker illegal – this is a common misconception for the American everyman. It also leaves room for state law to override the UIGEA.

“They seem to be saying that if the state where the bet is placed says internet gambling is illegal, then processing that payment is illegal' … meaning that it is not illegal if the state doesn't have a law saying internet gambling is illegal” said Head of iMEGA, Joe Brennan Jr.
