UFC Fighter Martin Kampmann Beats Pros in Reno Poker Event

Thursday, 22 May 2014

The somewhat inexplicable link between poker and Mixed Martial Arts grew a little bit stronger recently thanks to UFC welterweight, Martin Kampmann.

The Danish fighter, who now lives and trains in the US, is part of Ultimate Poker's team of representatives and earlier this week he managed to fend off some established players in Reno.

Thanks to the tutelage of Jason Somerville, Martin breezed through the early rounds of the inaugural #RunItUp event (Somerville's YouTube training brand) and even surpassed his mentor on the way to victory.

Much like his country's most famous grinder, Gus Hansen, Kampmann's style is somewhat unorthodox and aggressive but it proved to be a deadly combination as he eventually scooped the $52,000 top prize.

With the WSOP just around the corner and no UFC fights scheduled, it's likely we'll see Kampmann become one of the many sports stars indulging their competitive sides in Las Vegas this summer.
