A poker tournament based solely on skill rather than luck? Is such a thing possible? Well that's what International Poker Federation are hoping to achieve in the inaugural Duplicate Poker Nations Cup that will take place at the EDF Energy London Eye from 17th November.

The unique concept will see players, “dealt exactly the same cards in exactly the same position on neighbouring tables. With all players in a particular seat given the same allocation of cards the only determining factor in the result of the tournament is how skilfully each player uses them.”

A total of 72 players from 12 countries including the UK, USA, Germany, France, Spain, Ireland and Brazil will compete in the Nations Cup with each contest taking place in a single pod of the London Eye so no information can be shared between the tables.

“The Nations Cup will be a genuine celebration of all that is best in intellectual sports. Some of the world’s best players playing for pride and the honour of representing their countries in an intense competition with the added spice of international rivalry,” said, International Poker Federation President and Big Deal author Anthony Holden.

“Poker is played by millions around the world and Duplicate Poker is the game in its purest form. Players compete against each other based on skill, without any fluctuation in chance. I believe that it’s the best way to highlight poker as a game of strategic skill and as a Mind Sport. The Nations Cup will be a genuine celebration of all that is best in intellectual sports with the added spice of international rivalry.”

Taking place shortly after the Duplicate Poker Nations Cup is the IFP World Championship aka “The Table” at London's County Hall starting on 19th November. The $500,000 event is an invitation only affair which will see 130 of the best tournament players in the world battle it out for a first prize of $250,000.

Both events form part of the London Mind Sports Festival.
