The World Series of Poker’s first jaunt to the land of barbeques and kangaroos is just two weeks away and in an effort to pique fans’ interests before the event the organisers have named three star captains for the Caesars Cup.

Started back in 2009 as part of the WSOPE festival in London, the invite only match pits teams of pros against each other in a battle for national pride.

Traditionally contested by the Europe and the US, this year’s incarnation will also feature a specially selected Asia-Pacific team.

Being one of the four events due to be televised at this year’s WSOP Asia-Pacific, the organisers wanted some big names to lead their respective regions into battle. For that reason Sam Trickett (Europe), Phil Ivey (US) and Joe Hachem (Asia-Pacific) were all choose to be captains.

Because of the inclusion of a third-party, for the first time in the event’s history, a semi-final match will take place before the main showdown. In a best of three shootout, Europe will battle against team Asia-Pacific in a bid to challenge the defending champions: the US.

The exhibition will certainly be worth following when it kicks off on April 14, not least because of its unique format which sees alternate players taking part in the same hand and sharing stacks.

The WSOP APAC festival runs between April 4 and 15 inside Melbourne’s Crown Casino and feature a number of tournaments, including a $10,000 Main Event which kicks off on April 11.
