The halls of Washington had some poker visitors this week, with around 100 people arriving to lobby for the legalisation of online poker.
Amongst the hundred were some of America's best poker players: Chad Brown, Annie Duke, Howard Lederer, and Vanessa Rousso, all there to support the cause.
“Yes, it can be used as a vice,” confessed Lederer to Anne Broache, “but for most of us it’s a wonderful form of entertainment that actually massages your mind, gets you thinking.”
The 'Professor of Poker', plus the other pros in the group, claim that poker is a game of skill for that reason. Online poker's problems tend to originate from most considering it to be a game of chance in the same vein as bingo. The group supports bills that would still regulate online poker - stopping both under-age children from playing or reserving the right to ban those with gambling problems - but would also like to see money to be wagered.
The bills which the group are appealing for should appease the European Union and the World Trade Organisation, both of whom believe that by banning online gambling, the US has violated trade agreements.
