Tuesday, 26 May 2009

Tony Phillips outlasted a field of 151 runners to claim his maiden GUKPT victory and with it a cheque for £47,200. In doing so the 22-year old Londoner became the youngest player to win a GUKPT main event title.

Phillips dominated proceedings throughout, claiming the overnight chip lead as well as holding a quarter of the chips available at the start of final table play. The final table proved to be the fastest in GUKPT history with four players eliminated in the first half hour. The rapid pace continued until Phillips and Steve Jelinek were left. After a brief heads up encounter Phillips sealed the win when his AJ outflopped Jelinek’s pocket 9s.

The final results and payouts were as follows:

1st - Tony Phillips - £47,200
2nd - Steve Jelinek - £30,200
3rd - Henning Granstad - £20,400
4th - Dave Clark - £12,850
5th - Peter Smithson - £9,050
6th - Laurence Houghton - £7,550
7th - Haitao (Colin) Wu - £6,050
8th - Mohamed Muse - £4,550
9th - Finn Stewart - £3,000

The GUKPT now takes a break for a couple of months but in the meantime there are the Summer Series mini festivals in Bolton from 11-14 June, Aberdeen 18-21 June and Walsall from 25-28 June. The Tour proper resumes in Luton at the beginning of August.
