Tommy Vedes wins WPT Festa al Lago

Tuesday, 27 October 2009

Tommy Vedes put the disappointment of just missing out on the final table of this year’s WSOP behind him by winning WPT Festa al Lago. The New Yorker, who also had a deep run at EPT London, picked up a first prize of over $1.2m.

Vedes certainly rode his luck en route to victory and in doing so scuppered Freddy Deeb’s chances of a record tying third WPT win. Holding pocket queens, Vedes got his chips all in pre flop only to see a call from Deeb with pocket kings. It was looking sweet for Freddy as the board came J956 but a queen on the river gave Vedes a huge pot and left the 2007 WSOP HORSE champion crippled. It was all over for Deeb shortly afterwards when his A4 couldn’t crack Vedes’ sixes.

Vedes carried that momentum with him to set up a heads up encounter with Jason Lavallee. Once again Vedes needed some luck to help him out. Facing a 3.6m to 13.3m chip deficit Vedes pushed with A10. Lavallee called showing a dominating AJ but a 10 on the flop doubled Vedes up. Lavallee’s was left crippled shortly afterwards when his pocket 4s ran into Vedes’ pocket 5s. The short stacked Lavellee finally pushed with 86, was called by Vedes’ KQ. Trip queens gave Vedes his first WPT bracelet leaving Lavellee to settle for a $795,150 consolation prize.

The final table positions and payouts were as follows:

1. Tommy Vedes, $1,218,225
2. Jason Lavallee, $795,150
3. Craig Crivello, $477,090
4. Freddy Deeb, $278,300
5. Jason Burt, $208,725
6. Shawn Cunix, $168,970
