The PokerStars UKIPT Newcastle festival kicked off on Wednesday with a "sociable" side event but it was down to serious business yesterday as the £770 Main Event began.
Aspers Casino welcomed a total of 246 players and at the day's end it was Timotheos Timotheou who sat atop the leader board. Timotheou, who won a European Masters of Poker event in 2010, closed the day with 134,000 chips, followed by Kevin Killeen (126,600), Francis Lacken (92,900) and Khadir Khoshawy (86,300).Plenty of big names were among the 105 players who safely navigated their way through the opening flight including Bluff Europe columnists Ben Jackson (69,600) and Jeff Kimber (55,400), WSOP November Niner Sam Holden (30,300) and WSOP bracelet winner Scott Shelley (28,600).At least four former UKIPT winners are set to make their bow on Day 1B, as well as a number Team PokerStars Pros which should all make for some interesting action.Keep up to date with all the news from the poker world by following us on Twitter and Facebook.
