The biggest day of the year for online poker

Monday, 24 September 2012

Yesterday was one of the biggest days of the year for online poker with a host of big name pros hitting the tables for the climax of PokerStars' World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP). The $5k buy-in Main Event, which had a mammoth guarantee of $5,000,000 and 1,000,000 dollars guaranteed for first place. Also on the docket were the $10k 8-game High Roller and the $215 Sunday Million replacement. As always with Stars, all three events smashed their guarantees.

The Main Event attracted 1825 players who created an unbelievable prize pool of $9,125,000. It is a 2-Day Event, and after Day 1 245 players remain, all vying for that eye-watering first-place prize of $1,612,844. "munchenHB" of Cyprus is leading the field after the first day, with "moukari6", who took down a WCOOP earlier this series, in 2nd place.

As expected, the $10k 8-game field was incredibly stacked. Out of 96 players, the number of unknowns was probably in single figures. The unbelievably tough final table consisted of: Daniel Negreanu, Scott "gunning4you" Seiver, Jason Mercier, Niki “RealAndyBeal” Jedlicka, Ben “BensBenz" Yu. With such world-class players, it proved to be a very interesting tournament to watch. After a hard fought and swingy battle on the final table, Jason Mercier came out on top, beating “Gozobro" heads up to claim the $253,425 first prize, the WCOOP bracelet and the prestigious title.

The $215 WCOOP Sunday Million replacement nearly doubled the guarantee, attracting an amazing 9569 players, that set the first-place prize at $281,524. Not a bad potential return on $215. Also a 2-day event, just 106 players managed to make the second day, with Finnish pro Aku1206 just ahead of the rest of them.

With both the huge 2-day events resuming again shortly and concluding later today, it is sure to be another particularly exciting day of online poker.

New players can join in the action at PokerStars with a first deposit bonus of up to £400.
