He could walk on water, cure the incurable, and rustle up a veritable feast with just water, fish and a bit of bread. While the original Jesus was certainly a powerful one, we’re starting to wonder who’d win out of him and Chris Ferguson at heads-up No Limit Hold’em.
The NBC Heads-Up Championship entered its fourth incarnation this week, and for the third time, Ferguson found himself duking it out with another to win the title. In the inaugural season he fell to the hands of Phil Hellmuth, the following year Ted Forrest pipped him at the last. At the third time of asking though, the one they call ‘Jesus’ closed out the deal to win the title and the $500,000 first place prize.
The man who stood between Ferguson and the title was Andy Bloch, who in the inaugural $50,000 H.O.R.S.E event took part in an epic heads up battle of his own against the late Chip Reese. The final started ominously for Ferguson, who after gathering a 4-1 chip lead then ran into two coolers and handing the first match to the former MIT blackjack team member.
Chris Ferguson had got this far twice already, and showed a resilience here which all the great champions show. Many others might have crumbled after the two body blows from the previous match, but Ferguson gritted his teeth and settled into the task of winning both of the remaining matches. He did just that, too. The second match was sealed after Ferguson made quad queens against Bloch, before the match was decided in one of the most intriguing hands of the tournament.
So many of these tournaments are decided by coin flips; two overs against a pair and so on. There was none of that here though, and when Bloch made the call on the turn for all of his chips with Ts-4s on a Tc-7s-3s-7h board, it was the river which decided it all. It was black, but not a spade to complete Bloch’s flush but the 7c, giving Ferguson the better of the two full houses.
Consistent and now a champion – Chris ‘Jesus’ Ferguson: don’t play him heads up, he’s a bit useful.
