The Ivey Room opens at the Aria hotel and casino

Monday, 24 May 2010

The opening day of The Ivey Room at the Aria was marked with a million-dollar VIP freeroll over the past weekend, which is appropriate enough since million-dollar craps games and prop bets probably wouldn’t have worked as well.

"I come from nothing, and now I'm here... I never thought there would be a poker room named after me. I never thought poker would be televised... I was just a kid who had a passion for poker, and I'm very grateful for my life,” Ivey told PokerNews. “No one has any idea how much this means to me.”

Ivey, looking sharp in a checked grey jacket, cut the ribbon with some oversized scissors before play began on the tournament, which saw the nine finalists split the prize pool to $50,000 each and divvying up the other $250,000 as bounties. Chino Rheem won $100,000 for eliminating Ivey from the tournament.

Larry Litton was the man lucky – or unlucky – enough to play Ivey heads-up for $250,000 but unsurprisingly didn’t win. Funny that.
