Zak Penn’s ‘mocumentary’ The Grand, which will debut on April 27, gathers comedians Woody Harrelson, Judy Greer, Richard Kind, Michael McKean, Jason Alexander, among others, and gets them to play a poker tournament. The wild card of the film, and one of the things that makes it incredibly funny, is that each of the actors were given character traits and asked to create a character which they were to maintain throughout the game.
The actors made an excellent psychodrama out of the game, though it is thought that real live pros are probably not as vicious, or as funny. Cheryl Hines, who is a pro celebrity player, was not so far from her usual character, being talkative at the table in an attempt to put people off.
In one of the scenes Werner Herzog attacks Chris Parnell who jumps on a chair and starts making bird noises. Let’s hope it doesn’t catch on at the World Series!
