To most, the four of diamonds is meaningless – a card without any significant importance. But all of that changed yesterday when the four of diamonds made its debut in the history books as the first card to be dealt in a legal poker game in Singapore.
The card was dealt to a Finnish poker player, Antero Vartia. The Finn was overwhelmed by the level of national interest in the event, where more than one hundred spectators and one hundred and sixty players gathered for the opening qualification event.
Local and international press were out in force to record the landmark event. “I must admit I was slightly nervous with all the cameras around,” Vartia said. “But this is a major step for Singapore and I feel honoured.”
Vartia, 25, runs a souvenir business in Helsinki. He plays online poker most days as a sideline and the Betfair Asian Poker Tour event in Singapore is his first major live poker tournament.
“Poker is a great game which has catapulted into popular culture in the rest of the world,” added Vartia, “Singapore is ahead of the pack in Asia.”
