In the modern era, with tournaments packed with online qualifiers, pros, and amateurs keen to take their shot at infamy and a lot of prize money, we’re accustomed to seeing massive fields. That’s why the Tunica leg of the WPT comes as a breath of fresh air, with a field of 259 – a far cry from the 664 which took part in the Doyle Brunson Five Diamond Classic.
The title itself has already been taken down by the likes of David Ulliott, Scotty Nguyen and Barry Greenstein, so it’s a tournament with prestige. Some of the names who won’t be joining the list of winners are Daniel Negreanu, Jamie Gold, Gavin Griffin, J.C Tran, Mark Seif or Phil Ivey. Ivey in particular had a non-descript time at the tournament, turning up four hours late and then busting before he’d completed one level of play.
Despite the small field, there have been some ‘interesting’ plays made by some the amateur players which litter this smaller field. A particular favourite is this gem. In the first level of play, with blinds at 50/100, David Pham opens the pot making it 300 to go. Play folds to The Hero, who asks how much the bet is. On finding out, he then instantly moves all in for 20,000. Pham looks a little confused as he mucks, only to hear the reply of “I didn't want you to get two pair,” whilst claiming he’d had pocket aces. Genius stuff.
The notable name at the top of the chip count going into Day 2 is Chad Brown, who sits on 112,325. Matt Culberson, a player who has had a good run in the preliminary events in Tunica, is in close on 98,000. Not too far out of contention are WPT winners Jose Rosenkrantz (82,025) and Hoyt Corkins (64,750).
