Thang Luu wins WSOP Event #4 - $1,500 Omaha Hi-Low Split-8 or Better...again

Tuesday, 2 June 2009

Vietnam´s Thang Luu has joined a very exclusive World Series Of Poker Club. The winner of the 2008 $1,500 Omaha Hi-Low Split-8 or Better event repeated the feat yesterday, becoming only the ninth player in WSOP history to successfully defend their title in the exact same event.

His 2009 achievement was even more impressive than last year´s win as he had an extra 85 players to beat this time round. The 34-year-old, who now lives in Las Vegas, outlasted a field of 918 runners including Annie Duke, Todd Brunson, Layne Flack and Eli Elezra (who all cashed) before seeing off Freddy Deeb and Ed Smith at the final table. Luu collected prize money of $263,190 in addition to the all-important bracelet.

Commenting on his double success Luu said "It feels even better than the last one I think these kinds of $1,500 buy-in events are the best for me. There are a lot of new players in the [lower buy-in tournaments]."

The final table positions and payouts were as follows

1. Thang Luu ($263,190)
2. Ed Smith ($162,109)
3. Ming Reslock ($106,373)
4. Robert Price ($73,404)
5. Pascal Leyo ($53,293)
6. Jordan Rich ($40,611)
7. Jim Geary ($32,404)
8. Freddy Deeb ($27,028)
