Team PokerStars PRO George Danzer Wins WCoOP Bracelet

Saturday, 12 September 2009

Yesterday was the first and only day of the PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker tournament series that featured not a single hand of No-Limit Hold ‘em. Instead, the action was even faster and more furious – not only was it Pot-Limit Omaha, not only was it six-max, but it was a rebuy tournament.

Just a shade under 1,000 players registered the $300 + $20 buy-in, and over the next few blind levels the high-variance nature of Omaha lead to 575 re-buys with 679 add-ons; creating an overall prize pool of $654,000 to smash the $400,000 guarantee.

This awarded $109,000 to the winner of the tournament, and with several Team PokerStars PROs still in the hunt, there was everything to play for. Andre Akkari made it to 106th place, Humberto Brenes and his shark reached 64th and 2003 World Series of Poker champion Chris Moneymaker finished in 59th.

George Danza, however, steamrolled towards the final table of six, arriving in third after some big swings. Eventually the action made it three-way, until Danza holding AA96 eliminated the QJTT of buck21 to reach the heads-up stage with kunkku, holding a 2.5-1 chip advantage.

After only ten hands, it was all over – with blinds at 60k/120k, the pot was 3-bet by Danza. His opponent called to see a flop of Ac-Qh-8c for a 1.4m pot. Kunkku raised Danza’s pot bet all in and saw a quick call.

The PokerStars PRO held Qd-Jd-Qs-5s for top set while, in typical PLO fashion, kunkku had 8d-7d-7s-8h for middle set. The Td turn and 2s river did kunkku no favours and he had to settle for $81,000 and the runner-up spot.

The full final table positions and payouts are as follows:

1st place: GeorgeDanzer ($109,545.00)
2nd place: kunkku ($81,750.00)
3rd place: buck21 ($62,130.00)
4th place: TheTaker ($42,510.00)
5th place: badbanker70 ($28,056.60)
6th place: parksy1066 ($19,620.00)
