The first ever US PokerBowl was won on Tuesday, with Team Cincinnati victorious and walking way with $600,000.
Five teams out of the initial 25 qualified for the final: Cincinnati, Detroit, St Louis, Hollywood and New Jersey. Notable names amongst those teams were Scotty Nguyen, Mark Seif and Kathy Leibert (all for Detroit!), Chip Jett, Eric ‘Rizen’ Lynch and Brandon Adams.
However it was Steve Dannenmann’s team from Cincinnati which came out on top. Dannenman himself won’t be taking too much of the credit though, after he and team mate Ari Goldstein were out early in the tournament.
Steve Kingsley and Vinny Napolitano were the most successful Cincinnati players, making the final table.
Kingsley went out in 8th though, leaving Vinny to fight for Team Cincinnati on his own. And fight he did.
First Napolitano doubled up right after Kingsley had been knocked out, then took control when down to five. First he doubled up through World Champion Scotty Nguyen, then busted John Kim and Nguyen in fourth and third place respectively.
Unlike Singer vs Pham at over the road at Caesars, this heads up match was a little shorter, with Allen Kessler and Napolitano taking precisely one hand to decide matters. Napolitano’s AK all in was called by the KJ of short-stacked Kessler, no Jack, no running straights… just two aces on the flop. Kessler picked up a flush draw on the turn, but Team Cincinnati faded that, and took the title with the $600,000 first place prize.
