Poker's high rollers were out in force in the capital yesterday for the opening day of the £60,000 buy-in WPT Alpha8 London.

Fifteen players took to the tables at the Palm Beach Casino in Mayfair with five of them firing a second bullet after an early bust out. That means the prize pool currently stands at £1,160,000 but there's power to add as entry is open until level nine.

The man leading the charge for the big score is British hedge-fund manager and high stakes regular Talal Shakerchi. Last year's EPT London High Roller winner will return with 385,000 followed by Isaac Haxton (297,500), Dan Colman (235,400) and Britain's Stephen Chidwick, who was involved in one of the most amazing pots of the night.

Chidwick was all-in with pocket aces against Vladimir Troyanovskiy and Philipp Gruissem. Nothing remarkable about that except that both of his opponents held pocket kings. The aces held for Chidwick, putting him in excellent position for a deep run.

Eleven players will be back when play resumes later today. They include last year's winner Philipp Gruissem (148,400), Sam Trickett (127,600) and short-stack Erik Seidel (21,100).
