As ever, it’s come down to the forward thinking Swedes to push things forward and deliver a first for the online gaming community: state-backed internet poker. While other governments spend their time considering whether to outlaw it altogether, the Swedish parliament agreed last November to the state lottery, Svenska Spel, teaming up with games company Boss Media, to produce a new site that earn revenue much like any lottery. Boss have designed all the software, but Svenska own the site.
The aim, according to both companies, is to provide a high level of online entertainment, cater for the massive growth of online poker, whilst promoting responsible gaming. As it’s essentially owned by the state, there are greater security controls for both investors and the end user. It’s simple, bound to catch on and will clearly never be given a thought outside the progressive areas of Scandinavia. Here’s hoping though.
