The Swedish Government-run and licensed gambling company Svenska Spel AB has posted record profits for 2006 and puts part of its success down to the online poker side of the operation which was launched in March 2006.
'It has really fulfilled its purpose to bring home a big part of the Swedes' unregulated poker playing to a responsible environment within the country's borders,' said CEO Jesper Karrbrink in an interview with a Swedish newspaper.
In total, the company made $685 million profit during 2006. The results are the best to date and indicate that the Swedish way might well be employed by other countries in the wake of the controversy caused by the US decision to effectively ban online gambling.
Karrbrink is not complacent, however, and has commented that he would like to see changes in the Swedish gaming market.
'New gambling legislation through which all types of gambling are regulated is needed,” he said. “Whether it's through a state monopoly, or a license system where we compete with privately owned companies is up to the politicians to decide.'
'With this record profit to back us up, we will feel pretty comfortable either way,' Karrbrink added.
