Sven Ragnar Astrom wins WPT Venice

Tuesday, 12 May 2009

A field of 397 sat down at the stunning 15th century Casino di Venzia for the inaugural WPT event in Italy over the weekend. A number of top pros including Annette Obrestad, Dario Minieri and Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier paid the €4,400 buy in but they proved no match for Sweden’s Sven Ragnar Anstrom and Per Martin Jacobson who took the top two places.

The final hand could have been straight out of a movie with Jacobsen hitting the nut flush on the river only to see his opponent turn over a full house. Anstrom collected €397,960 and with it a seat in the $25k buy in WPT Main Event 2010. Jacobsen’s disappointment was tempered with a cheque for €238,840.

The final positions and pay outs were as follows:

Sven Ragnar Åström €397,960
Per Martin Jacobson €238,840
Vincent Pasdeloup €159,740
Michael McDonald€109,540
Michele Slama €86,720
Mario Adinolfi €66,940

The WPT now heads to Barcelona for the Spanish Championship in June with further stops in Cyprus and Marrakech in September and October respectively.
