Steve Jelinek makes it British bracelet number five

Friday, 25 June 2010

This year's WSOP was supposed to be year of the woman. Well it should be the year of the Brits as Steve Jelinek makes it bracelet number five for Blighty at this year's World Series.

The UK tournament regular went into the final day second in the chip counts and kept the pressure on throughout the final table. Big names came and went (Barry Greenstein in 12th and Phil Hellmuth in 7th) until just Jelinek and American John Gottlieb were left standing.

There was plenty of action in the heads up encounter with a number of all in showdowns but the Birmingham based player eventually sealed the win holding AdKh9d5c on a Qs10c8d4d5s board. Gottlieb's holding of AsAhQd4h couldn't pick up any portion of the pot and when the stacks were counted Jelinek had the American covered by just 135,000 leaving him to celebrate a $245,871 payday with of course the all important bracelet.

“It’s not quite sunk it yet" said Jelinek, "But you would not know how much this means to me because I’ve been a professional for two-and-a-half years and a serious player for seven. I’ve been down on my luck, maybe through poor play, maybe through a bit of mismanagement, or picking the wrong games. My bankroll was down a bit. I decided to come to the WSOP this year and try and get a gold bracelet to try and continue my poker career and that’s what it means to me – not only to win the biggest prize in poker, in the best setting, in the best tournaments, against the best players – but to be able to continue my poker career as a winner.”

Fellow UK players Darren Sprengers and Joel Ettedgi both had very deep runs finishing in 11th and 9th positions respectively.

1 Steve Jelinek $245,871
2 John Gottlieb $151,884
3 Anders Taylor $97,913
4 Michael Chappus $71,728
5 Ben Lamb $53,319
6 Mandy Thomas $40,169
7 Phil Hellmuth $30,633
8 Ryan Karp $23,635
9 Joel Ettedgi $18,432
