Stars Rise and Fall at WPT Bay 101

Tuesday, 11 March 2014

Yesterday marked start of the WPT's Bay 101 Shooting Star event and by the time the masses had settled down for the opening session the player count had reached 312.

The San Jose is always a popular event due to its unique structure and this year Matt Savage had put together a list of 50 stellar bounty players with targets worth $2,500 on their backs.

Indeed, from the likes of Daniel Negreanu, Dominik Nitsche and Chris Moorman, to UFC announcer Bruce Buffer and Jennifer Tilly, the number of pros on display during Day 1A was remarkable.

On top of being a bounty event, the $7,500 Shooting Star event has a re-entry structure which certainly contributed to an impressive turnout on Monday.

At the close of play a number of shooting stars, including Phil Hellmuth, Mike Matusow, Daniel Negreanu and Phil Laak, had been eliminated and when the clock was stopped just 117 hopefuls were left in contention.

Leading the way with 254,600 chips was Giorgio Medici, but when he returns on Day 2 he'll certainly have his work cut out with the likes of Marvin Rettenmaier, Antonio Esfandiari and Eugene Katchalov all still in contention.

Day 1B is set to kick off later today when even more players are expected to join this year's WPT Bay 101 Shooting Star event.

WPT Bay 101 Top Chip Counts:

1. Giorgio Medici - 254,600
2. Hai Tran - 253,500
3. David Forster - 225,200
4. Bryan Campanello - 210,000
5. Mukul Pahuja - 189,100
6. David Chiu - 174,000
