Simon Watt Wins APPT Auckland Main Event

Simon Watt Wins APPT Auckland Main Event

Monday, 19 October 2009

The PokerStars Asian Pacific Poker Tour concluded last night with hometown hero Simon Watt outlasting a field of 263 in the $3,250 championship event to earn a first-place prize of over $200,000.

The 26-year-old began his seemingly-inevitable quest to collect all the chips in play on Day 2, when he shot to the chip lead and held onto it like Phil Hellmuth clutching at shreds of dignity.

"I’m very confident going into the final table," Watt said before the nine-handed final table. That confidence paid off with a nice run of luck – in the penultimate hand, Watt caught an Ace on the turn after being caught bluffing with ace high against middle pair. The next hand was a classic coinflip that Watt won, his 55 outdoing the Kc-7c of Gerome Guitteau to take the $209k prize.

The full final table standings and payouts are as follows:

1. Simon Watt - $209,085
2. Gerome Guitteau - $142,020
3. Jason Brown - $82,845
4. Ke Sija - $55,230
5. Richard Lancaster - $42,606
6. Jens Walther - $31,560
7. Assadour Assadourian - $23,670
8. Lance Climo - $18,936
9. Michael Shinzaki - $14,202
