Tournament regular Chris Moorman thought it would be a great idea to buy his father a seat at the latest leg of the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour for his 52nd birthday. Little did he know that dad Simon would actually go on and win the thing.

Moorman senior, a credit manager for a toy company by day, outlasted a field of 296 runners to take the first prize of £88,960 and with it a seat at the £100,000 Champion of Champions event later this year.

Moorman, who was playing in only his second live event, beat Finnish freeroll qualifier Harri Isomaki heads up. All the chips went in with Moorman holding A5 against Isomaki’s K8. A flop of A-10-10 gave the Essex player a healthy lead. A harmless 6 on the turn and 9 on the river sealed the victory. Commenting on his dad’s unlikely success Chris said “The only way I can top this is to win the main event of the World Series of Poker.”

The final positions and payouts were as follows:

1. Simon Moorman £88,630
2. Harri Isomaki £54,380
3. Eddie Lundon £35,760
4. Kenny Burke £23,240
5. Andy Booth £17,280
6. Kevin Holdstock £14,300
7. David Maudlin £11,320
8. Ed Roger £8,340
9. Surinder Sunar £5,960

The tour now heads to the north east for GUKPT Newcastle which start on 18 May.
