Shakerchi is EPT London’s Highest Roller
Monday, 18 March 2013
While Ruben Visser was enjoying the best moment of his poker career so far, wealthy British amateur Talal Shakerchi was busy claiming his second High Roller title.
Well known on the high stakes tournament circuit, the hedge fund manager managed to overcome a plethora of talent at yesterday’s EPT London High Roller final table.
Flanked by the likes of Faraz Jaka, Fabian Quoss, Vicky Coren and recent back-to-back WPT final-tablist Paul Volpe, Shakerchi kept his composure despite being an underdog on paper.
Just as Shakerchi’s fortunes were determined by his starting stack, so to was Dimitar Danchev’s. The Bulgarian entered the final table as the shortest stack and couldn’t improve his position in the early offing.
After losing a flip to Faraz Jaka, the tournament grinder broke the first elimination bubble, allowing a wave chips to further purge the final table.
As pros switched the table for the rail, only Jaka could prevent Shakerchi from adding another High Roller title to his résumé.
However, with a 4:1 chip lead the Brit wasn’t prepared to give away his advantage easily and after Jaka made a move with Ad Qs. Shakerchi was able to make the easy call with pocket queens. No “ace from space” was forthcoming for Jaka and, with that, Shakerchi banked £436,330 to take his lifetime winnings past the $1.5 million mark.
The in the money finishers were as follows:
