Scott Shelley beats JP Kelly to WSOPE Event 3 title

Scott Shelley beats JP Kelly to WSOPE Event 3 title

Wednesday, 22 September 2010

When young Brit JP Kelly won the £1,075 World Series of Poker Europe event in 2009, it was history-making; along with his $1,500 Pot Limit Hold ‘em WSOP 2009 bracelet it made him the first player to win WSOP gold on both sides of the Atlantic.

That’s why the poker world was looking to him when he made the final table of this year’s small buy-in event with a chance to become the first player to win back-to-back WSOP hold'em events since Phil Hellmuth managed it in the 1990s.

The event whittled down 582 entrants to just 9 over three days and eventually Kelly was heads-up with Scott Shelley. The pressure was on to break Phil Ivey’s record as the youngest player to win three bracelets and become the first two-time WSOPE champion.

Famous Brit lost out to unknown Brit though and Scott Shelley has taken his first bracelet and a first prize of £133,857. Shelley, who works for PKR.com said, “The money is huge for me. But what really means more than I can say is getting the gold bracelet. I really am at a loss for words.”

The 24-year-old Shelley won his seat after taking down a private £100 sit and go satellite with colleagues at PKR. The runner-up finisher in that qualifier also has reason to cheer as he was guaranteed 20% of Shelley's winnings. That accounts for a very nice £26k pay day!

Gallant runner up Kelly receives immense accolades for back-to-back final tables in the top two spots; we’re sure big things will happen for this man in the very foreseeable future.

The full final table payouts were as follows:
1.      Scott Shelley (£133,857)
2.      JP Kelley (£82,854)
3.      Jeppe Bisgaard (£55,063)
4.      Paul Pitchford (£40,862)
5.      Kaveh Payman (£30,666)
6.      Mehdi Senhaji (£23,239)
7.      Jack Lyman (£17,768)
8.      Karim Jomeen (£13,694)
9.      Nicky Katz (£10,633)
