Ryder Cup style event set for WSOP Europe

Friday, 5 June 2009

The Ryder Cup has provided some of the most memorable moments in sport in recent years and now poker has its chance to emulate them. The Casino at the Empire in Leicester Square will be the venue for the inaugural Caesars Cup on 25th September 2009 where Europe’s best players will face their counterparts from the Americas in a unique team event.

Two teams of eight, captained and selected by Annette Obrestad and Daniel Negreanu will meet in a series of heads up and partner events. Points will be awarded for each match with new wrinkles like ‘alternative betting’ promised. Like the Ryder Cup there is also a wild card selection. In Europe’s case, the wild card will be a qualifier from Betfair Poker. The winner of the Caesars Cup Leader Board tournament will be awarded the final place in the team.

An excited World Series of Poker Vice President Ty Stewart said “Nothing brings out competition like representing your country. This continent versus continent format will draw the biggest names in poker to see who will lay claim to the inaugural Caesars Cup.”

Betfair’s Director of Poker Bruce Stubbs added “What better way to showcase poker at the WSOPE than to pitch the elite poker players from both Europe and the Americas against each other. We all know that poker is a highly competitive game but with pride, bragging rights and the cup at stake, this promises to be one of the highlights of this year’s poker calendar.”
