Yevgeny Kafelnikov, habitually used to producing a different kind of Ace altogether, has won the Russian Poker Open, outlasting fifty-two players to take a cash prize of over $10,000. The Russian tennis pro, formerly ranked number one in the world, was said to react as though he had just won Wimbledon after he triumphed at the $300 buy-in Omaha hi-lo competition.
According to The Independent newspaper, Kafelnikov became interested in poker after he began visiting casinos in between tennis tournaments and became fascinated by the card tables. First he tried his hand at seven-card-stud in German casinos, then progressed to Hold’em and his game of choice, Omaha.
