The Gala Coral Great British Poker Tour’s second leg took place last weekend in Nottingham. A total of 224 players took their seats at the event, which was eventually won by Rupinder ‘George’ Bedi.
The buy in of £550 seems to be the middle ground in British poker for amateurs and pro players. While there was the usual selection of enthusiastic amateurs willing to take their shot at the prize, some of the more familiar faces on the UK poker circuit came to play too. Dave Colclough, Maria Demetriou and Dave Smith joined the ranks, but none of them were able to navigate their way to the final table.
Two players who hit had already hit the limelight once were James Keys and Dominic Kay, both of whom had final tabled the £10,000 buy-in WSOP Europe Main Event last summer. Both cashed this event, showing they were not one-hit wonders. While Kay finished in 11th, Keys went deep, eventually getting down to heads-up action with Bedi.
The big stack of Bedi was too much for Keys to overcome though, and when all of the money went in the man they call George was in great shape, his Ace-Nine dominating Key’s Ace-Seven. There was no help for the underdog, and Bedi ended up cashing £27,000 for his first place finish, as well as securing his berth at the GBPT Grand Final.
