Roberto Romanello leads $1m guaranteed English Poker Open

Wednesday, 16 September 2009

A quick glance at the list of runners at the English Poker Open reveals that Britain, for the time being at least, is the global centre of world poker. The 213 players who gathered at Dusk Till Dawn yesterday included Doyle Brunson, Phil Hellmuth, Annette Obrestand and November Nine finalist James Akenhead, but at the end of day 1 it was Roberto Romanello who held the chip lead.

Other big names amongst the 57 remaining players are Hendon Mobster Joe Beevers, WSOP Main Event finalist Jon Kalmar, Liv Boeree and a very short-stacked Dave Ulliott. The Hit Squad’s Praz Bansi, who saw his stack drop to just 6k before finishing the day with over 50k chips, is also very handily placed.

The big American names didn’t fare quite so well though. Hellmuth bowed out in a classic race, his AK falling foul of a pair of queens, while Brunson was eliminated when his king high flush ran into an ace high one. It was a similar story for Norway’s former WSOPE Main Event Annette Obrestad who got short stacked, pushed her K8 and was outdrawn.

Play resumes at 2pm today when the field of 57 will be whittled down to a final table of nine. They will be competing for a first prize of £208,367 with the bubble bursting in 18th place at £6,411.
