If you happen to have booked a week’s holiday between June 9 and 16 to visit Manchester, England for what was been billed as “the biggest poker festival in Europe”, it’s time to cancel the flights and head to Vegas as originally planned.
The Rivercard Poker Festival, due to take place at Old Trafford, the home of Manchester United, has been cancelled thanks to new guidance notices from the UK Gambling Commission. Sites including Paddy Power and Bowmans had been offering substantial packages that could be won through online tournaments. They included seven nights in a top Manchester hotel, a gala dinner, a tour of the stadium, zero rake cash games and entry into five poker tournaments. Needless to say, the organisers are more than a little put out.
In a statement, organisers blamed the gambling commission for their “lack of co-operation”. No new dates have been set and no one seems certain if the event will ever be rescheduled.
