Richard Gryko wins GUKPT Luton

Monday, 10 August 2009

Another bumper field gathered at Luton’s G Casino for the Main Event of the latest leg of the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour. In the end it was Richard Gryko who outlasted the 304-runners to claim the first prize of £88,850 and a seat in the Champion of Champions event.

The young online star beat Alan McLean heads up, sealing the win holding A9 to McLean’s pocket 4s. The flop brought no help but an ace on the turn gave Gryko the win.

Gryko finally has a major win under his belt after a string of almosts. In 2006 he was the last Englishman standing in the WSOP $10,000 Main Event and earlier this year he came runner up in the GUKPT heads up championship.

Last year's winner Sam Trickett, who won over £100,000 for his victory, took part in the tournament but was unable to defend his title.

The final table positions and payouts were as follows:

1. Richard Gryko £88,850

2. Alan McLean £53,950

3. Clive Madden £35,850

4. Nick McClelland £23,400

5. Chuck Thompson £17,350

6. Stacey Clarke £14,300

7. James Williams £11.250

8. Alan McBride £8,200

9. James Morris £6,100

There was also plenty of action in the side events. Stephen Spring took down the £100 NL Hold’em event for a cash of £4,760. David Johnson won the £150 Pot Limit Hold’em event for £2,450. Glenn Ashworth took the £11,860 top prize in the £200 No Limit Hold’em. The £500 double chance was won by Rahim Tadjsaadat who claimed a bumper £23,580. The HitSquad’s Karl Mahrenholz won the £300 PLO for a score of £9,700.
