Richard Austin wins WSOP Event #35 $5,000 Pot Limit Omaha

Monday, 22 June 2009

Richard Austin outlasted a field of 363-runners to claim his first WSOP bracelet in the $5,000 PLO Event. The youngster from Jefferson, Indiana picked up a cheque for $409,484 after knocking out the second and third placed finishers in a single hand.

Down to three players, Austin was caught in the middle of a raising war between Cliff Josephy (who pushed all in holding KhKsAd8d) and Sorel Mizzi. Despite holding a ragged looking hand of QhJs8c5c he was priced in and called. After a flop of Kc9d3c Mizzi holding AsAh5d3d pushed and Austin called. The turn brought 8s but the river was a beautiful 7c, which gave Austin the flush, a double elimination and his maiden WSOP win.

It was not a day to be holding Kings on the final table as three players were eliminated after running into pocket aces.

Dave Ulliott led the British challenge finishing in 16th. John Kabbaj also made the money, as did Irishmen John O’Shea and Marty Smith.

The final table positions and payouts were as follows:

1. Richard Austin - $409,484
2. Sorel Mizzi - $253,048
3. Cliff “JohnnyBax” Josephy - $166,771
4. Dan Hindin - $116,748
5. Rifat Palevic - $85,516
6. Felipe Ramos - $67,663
7. Van Marcus - $55,687
8. Peter Jetten - $48,112
9. Samuel Ngai - $43,539
