Police raided a private club in Belfast last weekend, seizing money from the over 200 poker players in attendance at the time. Police moved in on the ‘Cavendish Club’ as they believed it was a ‘den of illegal gambling’.
Almost £23,000 was confiscated from the group of players, which included amongst its ranks, several doctors and lawyers. Police assumed the money would serve as evidence towards their push for charges against the players involved. However, after bringing the matter before the Belfast Magistrates Court earlier this week, police were forced to return the loot to the poker players after the magistrate ruled against the Proceeds of Crime Application.
Police are still pushing for a prosecution despite having to return the confiscated sums of money along with various other items of gambling equipment taken from the 'Cavendish Club'.
