The first major poker tournament to be held in the Czech Republic is underway at the Hilton Hotel in Prague. Day 1a of the Pokerstars European Poker Tour Prague Main Event saw 241 players buy in, with top European players in the field including Rolf Slotboom, Nicolas Levi, Julian Thew and Katja Thater.
Thew had a rollercoaster start to proceedings, finding a lot of his chips in the middle calling an opponents all in. Thew held K-J on a K-3-3 board. His opponent tabled K-5, and Thew was in good shape. However the 5 on the turn spoiled the plan for the Englishman who was left crippled when a meaningless ace fell on the river. There was no comeback for one of the form horses coming into the tournament, and Thew found himself on the rail early doors. He was later joined there by Ludovic Lacay and Marty Smyth.
Internet phenomenon Johnny Lodden went out in a big hand against Markus Golser. After two players limped into the pot, Lodden decided to move in with AKs, only to be called by Golser who ‘woke up’ with pocket nines. The doorcard Ace must have given hope until Lodden spied a nine on the flop with it, and he was eliminated.
87 of the initial 241 made it through to Day 2, including Slotboom and Thater. Adrian Koy on 115,500 and Maciej Mazur on 104,300 are leading the way overnight.
