As Pokerstars put it in their blog, “That's the same, if you will, as every citizen of the city of Chatanooga, Tennesee, sitting down for a poker game simultaneously.” The poker site had been the first online poker site to break the 100,000 landmark, which it did back in February 2006. The feat was considered so significant it was mentioned in the 2007 edition of the Guinness Book of Records.
With the passing of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, many thought internet poker would decline, starved of the funding which the UIGEA prohibited for American players. For Pokerstars, however, the legislation turned to be a positive factor when one of their major competitors, Party Poker, decided to pull out of the US market. Many of those players made the switch the Pokerstars, who had continued to serve the US market.
The site now boasts not only remarkably high numbers of players but also bumper tournaments, most notably the Sunday Million, which regularly sees tens of thousands parlay the $215 buy-in for their slice of a guaranteed $1m prize pool. This Sunday saw 150,000 hit the sit for the first time in its history, and once again the site had set another benchmark for its competitors to strive for.
