The PokerTek automatic poker tables that require no dealer or cards have gained a toehold in the Chinese market. The tables, which shows cards, pots and bets on a screen in front of each player, combine the advantages of Internet poker – lots of hands per hour and no dealer errors – with the reads, tells and banter of live games.
Already selling well in Europe and the US, PokerTek has now entered the market in the Special Administrative Region of Macau. The area, which has a more relaxed legal attitude to poker than mainland China, is popular with Westerners because much of China’s international trade is conducted through its port.
The 38 storey Galaxy StarWorld Hotel and Casino, the flagship entertainment complex of Galaxy Entertainment Group, has taken five ten seat tables and two of the heads-up version.
PokerTek chief executive Lou White made the arrangement sound like an aid package with his statement:
'Bringing PokerPro to Macau is a major milestone. Thanks to our technology, PokerPro will enable operators to offer live poker to their guests, while assisting with the issue of dealer shortages in the region.'
PokerTek trades as PTEK on the NASDAQ index.
