PokerStars.net EPT London, Day 1a: Pescatori Takes an Early Lead

Thursday, 2 October 2008

Almost three hundred players entered Day 1a of the EPT London Main Event, with many of those unfortunate enough not to win the WSOPE taking the taxi across London to Edgware Road. Among those who entered the first day here include Gus Hansen, Annette Obrestad, Patrik Antonius, John Phan and Kathy Liebert.

With a stellar list of entrants comes the impressive array of bustouts, with early victims including John Phan, Shane Schleger, Joe Beevers, Chris Ferguson and Shaun Deeb all knocked out before the evening.Gavin Griffin, a former EPT winner himself, managed to cause a poker pile-up, eliminating three players in one single swoop. Griffin's pocket Kings were good enough to eliminate a short-stacked player who made a move with 7-3 offsuit, Jeff Lisandro with A-8 and Freddie Deeb with pocket jacks. That little hand saw Griffin inhale a new mountain of chips.

Meanwhile, Max Pescatori was a busy little Italian, having arrived late and then proceeded to lose a big pot early in his campaign. Finally working his way into the groove, Pescatori eliminated a player on his way to earning a large stack, one he then redistributed around the table in random installments. One more surge late in the day saw 'The Fisherman' eventually end up as the overnight chip leader, heading up a group which includes Sorel Mizzi, Scott Montgomery and Gus Hansen.

Top five chip counts from Day 1a, EPT London.
Max Pescatori - 93,000
Sorel Mizzi - 92,500
Scott Montgomery - 86,000
Carter Gill - 78,000
Gus Hansen - 74,000
