PokerStars goes snooker loopy

Thursday, 7 January 2010

PokerStars has come to the rescue of World Snooker by agreeing a last-minute deal to sponsor the prestigious Masters event. The online giant will boost its profile considerably after throwing its weight behind the televised tournament that kicks off on Sunday.

Barry Hearn, chairman of World Snooker and no stranger to the world of poker said, “PokerStars are a major company and the biggest online operator in the poker industry. It’s potentially a good partnership for World Snooker, and although it’s only a one-year deal, we’ve got a credible brand name on board.

“It's very difficult to do a three-year deal with the event starting on Sunday but hopefully they will share our enthusiasm and we can sit down to talk about a longer deal afterwards.”

Exact figures haven’t been revealed but Hearn said that it amounted to, “an expectable amount of money”.

Hearn isn’t the only person involved in next week’s tournament that’s familiar with both green felt and green baize. Former Poker Million winner Jimmy White has been given a wild card entry for the tournament that starts at Wembley Arena on Sunday.
